Draupadi - Koral Dasgupta

Image
Draupadi, The Sati Series lll - Koral Dasgupta  Well, I began reading the book, slow paced, a long time ago and leapt into finishing the book, carried away by the spectacular narration. Draupadi, Panchali, Yagnaseni, Krishnaa, multiple names referring to the same person, yet way to different to be attributed as the same. The woman behind the mighty Pandavas was a glory herself.  The story picturizes Panchali's childhood, her bonding with her family, especially with her father King Drupad and her sister-turned-brother Shikhandini. Being a girl from a royal background, Draupad's daughter was not indifferent from any other adolescent girl, was easily intimidated. Her longing for Arjun, her complicated marriage with the five brothers, her weird relationship with her mother in law, are well traced till their journey back to Hastinapur. But the ultimate blow up was to come with the way the author has narrated the whole incident of the game of dice and it's after comin...

Krishna, the Man and His Philosophy - Osho

Image
Krishna, the Man and His Philosophy - Osho This is the first lengthy philosophical scripture that I read, printed over a massive length of 700 pages! The book begins with a brief introduction about Krishna, his timeless virtues and his profound significance at present. His basis and approach towards life is what everyone of us must incorporate within ourselves to lead a cheerful yet detached life, Osho says. Osho wants each of us to be a revolutionary, someone who goes through a sequence of sleepless nights until she or he achieves her or his goal. Throughout the book, the author has made an approximate analysis of the personalities of Krishna, Jesus, Mohammad, Buddha, Mahavira and even Gandhi just to make out the difference in the attitude they had towards life, so that they can be compared with that of Krishna.  Osho says, Krishna accepted life however it came, be it war or peace, love or hate, true or false, large or small, rich or poor, and more such opposites....

Kunti - Koral Dasgupta

Image
Kunti, The Sati Series ll - Koral Dasgupta   I'll be honest, I didn't want the narration to just end there, at such a crucial point. The beginning was mind blowing to be honest, I loved it! The author has come up with stories giving perks of the lives of the Panchkanyas, where she has portrayed these women in a quite different approach than the conservative narration which sidelines women from the mainstream and makes the entire history roll around men and their accomplishments.  Koral's Kunti is ambitious, bold, authoritative, confident and moreover, 'intelligent'. Her birth, adoption into a different home, her adaptation into her new home, her interest in the story of Ahalya, and more of such events in the life of this royal young lady seem to be quite sophisticated, according to the author.  Reading through the tale of Ahalya, Kunti finds herself getting infatuated towards Indra, the god of the five senses, which turns into a yearning, a longing, and ...

Animal Farm - George Orwell

Image
Animal Farm - George Orwell  I have this habit of reading the book cover, prologue and acknowledgement sections of any book I pick up. While reading the cover page of this book, I came across lines that said the author has drawn attention towards the nature of politics and what it does to the minds of the people in power. He has used animals as metaphors in the story to highlight the same. Throughout the storyline, we see how an estate changes from 'The Menor Farm' to 'The Animal Farm', only to get back to the same again, with power shifting from the human owner Jones to the pigs, who claim themselves to be the smartest creatures among the other animals in the farm.  The fact that the principles of equality and brotherhood among the animals established through 'The Seven Commandments' slowly transform in favor of the pigs and later get reduced to only a single commandment is hilarious. We can see factions among the other animals that are in favor of ...
